On 17 April, Commerce Minister Zhong Shan held a phone call with Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Sung Yun-mo of the Republic of Korea, and exchanged views on jointly tackling coronavirus and deepening trade and economic ties.

Minister Zhong Shan noted that under the planning and direction of President Xi Jinping, China has consolidated the progress in controlling COVID-19 outbreak. The economic and social order are returning to normal at a faster pace. As the pandemic takes a toll on world economy and international trade and investment, it鈥檚 important for China and the ROK to step up communication and coordination and implement in real earnest the agreement reached at the Extraordinary G20 Leaders鈥Summit and the Special ASEAN Plus Three Summit on COVID-19. While working together to control the outbreak, the two sides should continue to expand bilateral trade and investment, facilitate exchanges between business personnels, unblock trade flows, and maintain stability in industrial chains and supply chains. These efforts will create conditions for bilateral trade and economic cooperation to resume growth and rise to new heights, and inject impetus into global response to the pandemic and global economy.

Minister Sung Yun-mo noted that both countries have brought the epidemic under control. Central and local governments of the two countries have taken steps to facilitate work and production resumption and resolve difficulties in industrial chain and supply chain cooperation, and made positive progress. The two sides should continue to work closely together and set up an effective communication mechanism to facilitate entries and management of business personnels while keeping the virus in check. The two sides should also expedite phase two negotiations of China-ROK FTA, and push for the signing of RCEP by the end of this year as scheduled.

Zhong Shan replied that the two sides should jointly push all parties to sign RCEP by the end of the year as planned, accelerate the Trilateral FTA negotiations, and move forward the phase two negotiations of China-ROK FTA.Such concerted efforts will help to promote regional economic integration, safeguard the multilateral trading system against protectionism, and build an open world economy.
