On March 30, Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan and UK鈥檚 Secretary of State for International Trade Elizabeth Truss had a phone call and exchanged views on strengthening international cooperation in preventing and controlling the epidemic and deepening China-UK economic and trade relations.
According to Zhong Shan, President Xi Jinping put forward at the Extraordinary G20 Leaders' Summit on COVID-19 that countries should jointly strengthen their macroeconomic policies to counteract impacts, prevent world economy from falling into recession, and jointly maintain the stability of the global industrial chains and supply chains, which has been actively responded by all parties. China is willing to work with the UK to actively promote the Extraordinary G20 Trade and Investment Ministers Meeting to implement the consensus reached by the leaders, to oppose unilateralism and protectionism, and to safeguard the multilateral trading system, so as to make contributions to coping with the challenges of COVID-19 and to easing the downward pressure on the world economy.
Zhong Shan emphasized that recently President Xi Jinping had two phone calls with UK鈥檚 Prime Minister Boris Johnson and they reached important consensus on China-UK cooperation in fighting the epidemic and deepening China-UK relations. China is willing to work with the UK to implement the consensus of the leaders from both sides and to promote the healthy and stable development of China-UK economic and trade relations.
Truss said that the UK fully agrees with China's position on international cooperation in fighting the epidemic, and on opposing unilateralism and protectionism, and is willing to work with China to strengthen coordination and cooperation within the G20 framework, to strive to reduce trade and investment barriers and to keep the smoothness of global supply chains and industrial chains. The UK attaches great importance to the economic and trade relations with China, and is willing to actively explore future trade arrangements with China and to improve China-UK economic and trade cooperation.
The two sides also exchanged views on China-UK cooperation in fighting the epidemic. Zhong Shan said that China is willing to provide UK with necessary facilitation and support in purchasing and transporting medical supplies in China.
