Actively Expand Import to Stabilize Domestic Meat Supply

Stabilizing the supply of meat products necessary for the people's lives is an important part to serve the overall situation of epidemic prevention and control. The Ministry of Commerce has thoroughly studied and implemented the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's series of important instructions, and resolutely implemented the requirements of the CPC Central Committee to strengthen the market protection and supply in order to respond to the epidemic. MOFCOM has acted immediately to promote the import of meat products.

MOFCOM has strengthened monitoring to get hold of the dynamic market demand. The Ministry of Commerce timely contacted China Chamber of Commerce of Import and Export of Foodstuffs錛孨ative Produce And Animal By錛峆roducts, as well as leading companies and distributors of imported meat products to find out the current quantity of imported meat, port inventory and the companies鈥recent plans. According to preliminary monitoring, in the first half of January, the actual arrivals of imported pork, beef and other meat totaled 310,000 tons, with an increase of 275% year on year. It is expected that the amount will reach 640,000 tons in the whole January, with a year-on-year increase of 190%. The imported meat products from major ports such as Tianjin and Shanghai are in sufficient stock, and the industry estimates that there is currently a total of 160,000 tons of pork and beef stocks. Some leading import companies plan to import more than 100,000 tons of meat in the first quarter, a significant increase from the same period last year. Overall, the stock of imported meat is relatively sufficient.

MOFCOM has facilitated trade on imported meat. Based on the actual demand for meat products in the domestic market and the preliminary work, the Ministry of Commerce deepened horizontal cooperation between departments, collaborated closely with local governments and enterprises, and strengthened industry guidance to provide all-round facilitation for pork import. On the one hand, we have made full use of the commodity information platform of the Chamber of Commerce of Import and Export to roll out information on pork import, arrival dynamics, and key meat exporters. We have guided enterprises to conduct business connection and organize imports orderly. On the other, We have required local commercial departments, the Quota &Licensing Administrative Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export to have special procedures for special issues with immediate actions during the epidemic period. They will provide a green channel for meat import registration and automatic import license review.
